War Poetry and Literature

I looked at “The war Prayer” by Mark Twain and Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell The War Prayer is one I like the most because there is so much that you can picture by reading just the first paragraph. Yet as I read this I thought of how ironic it is that a whole town will come out to see solders leave for war and even though the town is encouraging them to come home safe it is still a sad fact that many will not. Yet not a person present will speak of the possibility. I have read “Shooting an Elephant” before reading it today and every time I read it I am surprised by the ending because for just a short minute there when you think he will not shoot it but he eventually does do to the pressure of the crowed behind him.

Doesnt peer pressure just suck! I feel so bad for the man who has to shoot the lil Elephant...but i also think her was in a tight situation, he had to decide wether or not the town people could be in harms way or if the crazy elephant would eventually calm down. I hate when they start describing the breathing patteren of the elephant then how long it took it to die... it is so sad

It's funny because it seems like everyone has posted the Mark Twain poem. I also read the Orwell piece and was surprised by the ending. It is a shocking piece but realistic too.

No one wants to think that it is their loved one that is not coming home but in reality it could be any one of those soldiers. It was surpising to me also when he shoots the elephant in the end because for a while there you thought he wasn't going to.
